He moved to Urbana as a small boy, was educated in Urbana Public Schools, Ohio Wesleyan University and graduated from Cincinnati Law School in 1858.
He left with the Ohio Volunteer Infantry Company G, January 17, 1862, and saw three years service in the Civil War. His letters to the Citizen and Gazette describing Camp Life and Battles were eagerly read. He wrote under the pen name of D. N. Arbaw (his name spelled backwards).
In 1865 and until 1879 he was half owner of the Citizen and Gazette with Joshua Saxton; Postmaster of Urbana, January 1878 to May 14, 1879.
W. A. Brand Post Grand Army of the Republic was organized in the 80’s after his death.
