He lived on his father's farm at Buck Creek, Union Township, Champaign County, Ohio as a boy.
One of the first volunteers in the Civil War, he was a member of the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, volunteering April 17,
1861, and resigning from the Ohio Company to enter the Regular Army, he was made a First Lieutenant of the 18th Regiment, United States Infantry. Saw service in the Army of the Cumberland and the Army of Tennessee; was wounded in his left arm at Chickamauga and thereafter served as mustering and disbursing Officer. Was breveted a Major and retired December 1, 1866. By Act of Congress, April 23, 1904, he was made a Major in the United States Army.
Mr. Brand served with Wells Fargo Company for some years.
