Young family finds harbor in Oceanside

Oceanside Blade-Tribune, Sunday, January 28, 1968

by Shirley T. Bonus

The several advantages of living in North County is luring more and more young families from larger cities.

One of the latest arrivals is Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Sandling and children Greg, 7, and Paula, 9.

Sandling, the new Oceanside Harbor Superintendent, in a recent interview said, "The Oceanside area has a great interest and attraction to Los Angeles residents, and we feel fortunate to be here.

Mrs. Sandling, slender and lighthaired, with an open friendly smile, added, "We have found the people here so gracious and helpful and we already know our neighbors."

The Sandling family is ocean oriented having lived in both Newport and Santa Monica for several years.

They both confessed surprise and amusement when they agreed that people in North County live at a faster pace and are more involved in community affairs than in larger cities.

The find the Oceanside location ideal for their various hobbies and family interests. They enjoy boating, golf and snow skiing.

Sandling, who prefens to be called "Sandy," said one of the first problems they had as a couple was over names. When he met his wife, Sandra, her popular nickname was "Sandy." "In the true tradition of the woman I allowed him exclusive rights to 'our' nickname." Sandra chuckled.

Sandra's former home was in New Hampshire where she attended the University of New Hampshire before her plans to graduate were interrupted by marriage.

Sandling is a native Californian, from Fresno, and has attended several colleges in Southern California.

He is active with many organizations connected with small craft harbors. He is on the Board of Directors of Harine Parks and Harbors Association and vice President of Harbor Masters Port Captains Association.

While her husband is busy traveling and attending meetings connected with his job Sandra has adopted a new project. She is working toward renovating and redecorating an older home they found, complete with stables for their daughter's fondest dream, a horse.

Her other interests that occupy her time include gardening and sewing.

The outgoing friendly couple will be celebrating their thirtheenth wedding anniversary on Feb. 4 and they both agreed.

"We feel like we will be celebrating many more anniversaries in our 'new' home of Oceanside."
