In 1817, James bought 200 acres of land on the water of Laurel Branch and Esthers (Easter) Creek in Floyd Co, VA.
In 1834, James was given permission to build a water grist mill and dam on Laurel Branch in Alum Ridge District, near the Montgomery County line. He owned land on both sides of the creek.
In August or September of 1860, James was living with his son Lewis in Floyd, Floyd Co, VA at the time of his death.
