Notes for John H. LESTER Jr
"After John married Mary Ann Terry and settled five miles northwest of the town of Jacksonville. He was a successful farmer and prominent citizen, a large taxpayer with some social distinction as an owner of slaves, as was accorded in his day. He served his community as justice of the peace; as such was a member of the county court, commissioned by the Governor of Virginia." In 1820, he bought the large home tract of Charles Simmons and moved to present Floyd Co. He lived about six miles north of the present town of Floyd. The house stood some distance behind the white frame house of George Simmons which was built years later and is now seen on the hill on present Route 8. Lester Cemetery #5 was on his place. In 1840, John was living in Floyd Co, VA with the following family members:
- son age 0 - 5 yrs old
- son age 15 - 19 yrs old
- son age 20 - 29 yrs old
- daughter age 10 - 14 yrs old
- daughter age 15 - 19 yrs old
- wife? age 50 - 59 yrs old

In 1850, John and Mary were farming in Dist. #15, Floyd Co, VA and their real estate value was $2,300.
